Amb. Dr. Dinesh Bhattarai

Advisor to the Prime Minister of Nepal

Dr. Dinesh Bhattarai is currently serving as foreign affairs adviser to the Prime Minister of Nepal. He has been Nepal’s Ambassador/Permanent Representative to the United Nations including Conference on Disarmament (CD) and International Organizations since 26 November 2007. He is accredited to the World Trade Organization in Geneva, Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) in Rome and United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in Vienna. Dr. Bhattarai is also concurrently accredited as Ambassador to the Swiss Confederation, Republic of Italy and the Republic of Croatia. He joined the Nepalese Diplomatic Service in April 1983. He served as First Secretary (Political Affairs) at the Embassy of Nepal in New Delhi from 1991-1994, and Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Nepal in Washington D.C. from 1998-2003. Dr. Bhattarai has worked in various capacities in Divisions of Protocol, Europe and America, Southeast Asia and Pacific, North Asia.
Prior to his appointment as Ambassador in 2007, Dr. Bhattarai headed the United Nations, International Organizations and International Law, and Multilateral Economic Affairs Divisions in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He did Masters in Public Administration, Economics, Bachelor of Law from Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu and Post Graduate Diploma in International Relations and Development from the Institute of Social Studies (ISS), The Hague, He obtained his Ph.D. in International Relations from the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi. He has co-authored a book, “Nepal-India: Democracy in the Making of Mutual Trust”, published in 1993.
