Dr. Syed Nuruzzaman

Former Chief, Countries with Special Needs Section, UNESCAP

Dr. Syed Nuruzzaman has served the United Nations for almost 26 years, his last assignment being the Chief, Countries with Special Needs, UN ESCAP, Bangkok. He is the co-founder of Dhaka-based Development Policy Group, an informal group dedicated to promoting greater understanding and sustainable development in South Asia.
He has extensive research experience and expertise in preparing analytical reports and studies for Governments and other stakeholders on key development issues such as achieving the MDGs and SDGs, regional integration and cooperation in trade, infrastructure development and connectivity and sustainable development of LDCs.
Prior to joining the UN ESCAP, he was the Chief, Monitoring and Evaluation Unit of Grameen Bank, a position that brought him close to development challenges faced by rural poor and the role microcredit could play in development.
Dr. Nuruzzaman has credible expertise in policy analysis with a proven track record of working effectively with key stakeholders – government officials, professional experts, NGO representatives and private sector entrepreneurs – on a host of issues such as those related to achieving MDGs and SDGs, poverty reduction, employment creation, empowerment of women through skills development, inter-country connectivity and regional integration.
He has a BSc (Econ) from the London School of Economics and a PhD in Development Economics from the East-West Center, University of Hawaii.
