Prof. Atiur Rahman

Chairman, Unnayan Shamannay, Bangladesh

Dr. Atiur Rahman is Professor of Department of Development Studies at University of Dhaka. Dr. Rahman served as the Governor of the Central Bank of Bangladesh (called Bangladesh Bank) between May 2009 and March 2016. Professor Rahman has a Ph.D. in Economics from The School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. Professor Rahman has published 56 books in English and Bengali, besides, numerous papers in national and international journals.
As the Governor of Bangladesh Bank, Dr. Rahman made significant contributions in the 3GF conference, Rio+20, COP18 and MDG Global Compact international negotiations. Dr. Rahman was member of the UNEP Enquiry on designing ‘global sustainable financing’.
Professor Rahman has won several national and international awards including, ‘Indira Gandhi Gold Plaque-2011’, ‘GUSI Peace Prize International 2014’, ‘Best Central Bank Governor – Asia Pacific, 2015’ by the Banker magazine, ‘Central Bank Governor of the Year for Asia 2015’ by the Emerging Markets, and ‘Bangla Academy Literary Award for 2015’.
