Prof. Deepak Nayyar

Emeritus Professor of Economics, Jawaharlal Nehru University, India

Professor Nayyar is Emeritus Professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University where he taught economics for 25 years. He is an Honorary Fellow of Balliol College, Oxford, and was Distinguished University Professor of Economics at the New School for Social Research, New York. Earlier, he taught at the University of Oxford, the University of Sussex, and the Indian Institute of Management.

Professor Nayyar served as Chairman of the Board of the World Institute for Development Economics Research, WIDER, Helsinki, and on the Board of Directors of the Social Science Research Council in USA. He was Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India and Secretary in the Ministry of Finance. He was also Vice Chancellor of the University of Delhi.

Professor Nayyar studied at Balliol College, University of Oxford, as a Rhodes Scholar, where he obtained a BPhil and a DPhil in economics. His research interests are primarily in the areas of international economics, macroeconomics and development economics. He has published more than 75 papers in academic journals and 15 books. His latest book, Catch Up: Developing Countries in the World Economy, was published by Oxford University Press.
